How to Care for Hot Spots at Home While Waiting for your Vet Appointment

What is a Hot Spot?!

Clue, it's not related to wifi in these cases, it's a Skin Infection! Also known as a Superficial Pyoderma.  Often times Hot Spots happen secondary to self trauma when a pet is itching uncontrollably.  This can be due to a number underlying reasons, such as: allergies, parasites, or fungal issues.

The key  to treatment is a combination of therapies to:
1.  Stop the Itch Systemically - I like to use Cytopoint injections and/or Apoquel tablets
2.  Treat the infection systemically - Antibiotics
3.  Treat the infection and decrease itch and inflammation topically - Ointments, Sprays, or Powders with medical grade antibiotic and steroids work well (Don’t forget to shave the area so that topical medications can get to work at the site of infection, rather than just onto the fur)

If you’re having trouble getting in to see the vet, there are a combination of things you can try at home as well to help give your pet some relief while waiting for your appointment:
1.  Fish Oil Supplement to help with itch and inflammation - Wellnergy Pets Skin & Coat Support is something I send home with all of patients with skin issues
2.  Soothe the Site - Wellnergy Pets Soothing Balm is my favorite option  or Soothing Shampoo works well as well if you're unable to shave your pet
3.  Decrease Itch if Related to Allergies - Give Benadryl 1mg/lb of your dogs’ weight by mouth

Keep in mind that even with first aid started at home, (may work about only 30% of the time, but it’s better than nothing!) Medical care and a long term plan with your veterinarian is often still needed for many of these cases! So don’t skip that vet visit!
