Ear Infections in Dogs: Signs and Management

Ear infections are one of the most common issues I see in dogs that come in to see me at our animal hospital. Some breeds, especially those with large, floppy, hairy ears, such as Cocker Spaniels, Shih Tzus, Miniature Poodles, Bulldogs, and Labrador Retrievers, are especially prone, but ear infections can occur in any breed. In all dogs, ear infections are painful, irritating, and can even be dangerous if left untreated. So please bring your pet in to see the vet if you see signs of:

  1. excessive head shaking or ear scratching
  2. red and inflamed ears
  3. black or yellowish discharge from the ears
  4. smelly, offensive odor from the ears

A good way to maintain your pet’s ears at home to prevent ear infections are with:

  1. Once every 2-4 week ear cleanings: my favorite is Micellar ear cleanser, you can find it on Amazon
  2. Daily skin supplements that help decrease inflammation and irritation: my favorite of course is Wellnergy Pets Skin & Coat Support, which is awesome! Because it has to be for my patients that have to deal with dry, allergen filled environment here in SoCal!

It features DHA Gold which is a powerful, all natural, anti inflammatory and nourishing ingredient sourced from Algae!
So make sure to help your pet keep those ears clean and healthy!

I hope this helps everyone when it comes to their pets! Feel free to reach out to our team on Facebook, Instagram, E-mail, or in the comments section for any other questions.
